the only species within the genus Probosciger, native to New Guinea, the Aru Islands and the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia. They are known for their impressive size, powerful beaks, and striking red facial patches. Here’s a closer look at these fascinating birds:

  • Appearance:

    • Large parrots, reaching up to 55-60 cm (21.5–23.5 in) in length
    • Smoky-gray to black colored feathers with a faint sheen
    • Long and distinctive yellow crest on their head
    • Very large and strong, sharply hooked black beak
    • Prominent bright red cheek patches, which can change color when the bird is excited
    • Almost black colored feet and legs
  • Behavior:

    • Intelligent birds, but not known for mimicking sounds to the same extent as some other parrots
    • Social birds that live in small groups of up to six individuals
